![]() AnalysisĪn aubade is a poem that is written to accompany the break of day, most commonly in the context of two lovers parting. ![]() The poem begins with the lovers drinking champagne, and ends with the burning nun running "silently toward her god," both of which use the same language of opening. ![]() Their dialogue is written into the poem in italics.Įven more complex, however, is the fact that these two alternate stories of the same day are also interweaved with lyrics from Irving Berlin's song "White Christmas"-also written in italics-which the epigraph tells us was the very song that was used as a signal for American forces to evacuate. These embodiments of chaos and death include a dead chief of police "facedown in a pool of Coca-Cola," a crushed dog in the street, gunfire, an explosive shell bursting, and a "nun on fire."Īt the same time that this destruction takes place, however, an intimate encounter is staged between a soldier and a woman in a hotel room that is interspersed with these images of destruction. The poem follows all of the death, destruction, and chaos that evolved in Saigon on April 29, 1975, when the American military evacuated civilians and Vietnamese refugees from the city by helicopter, leaving the city to fall to North Vietnamese forces. The poem "Aubade with Burning City" is the fourth poem in Ocean Vuong's Night Sky with Exit Wounds, located in the first section, and it is one of the most well-known poems from the collection. ![]()

![]() ![]() First there is the author's dawning realization that the platform is being manipulated by some very bad actors. It's a story that begins with a series of rude awakenings. ![]() Zucked is McNamee's intimate reckoning with the catastrophic failure of the head of one of the world's most powerful companies to face up to the damage he is doing. Still a large shareholder in Facebook, he had every good reason to stay on the bright side. He had mentored many tech leaders in his illustrious career as an investor, but few things had made him prouder, or been better for his fund's bottom line, than his early service to Mark Zuckerberg. ![]() If you had told Roger McNamee three years ago that he would soon be devoting himself to stopping Facebook from destroying democracy, he would have howled with laughter. This is the dramatic story of how a noted tech venture capitalist, an early mentor to Mark Zuckerberg and investor in his company, woke up to the serious damage Facebook was doing to our society and set out to try to stop it. ![]() ![]() ![]() So basically this book follows the situation the main character had dealt on in Monster Blood 3 where Evan grows in a size of kaijuu (honestly don't remember what's the exact height), but we see a more lighter and condensed version of it as our main character only grows into 9 feet tall and it just mainly resolves into a deus ex machina like any Monster Blood books and it's stupid and laughable. There's also Monster Blood as the main conflict of this book and I gotta say some parts of it are kinda creepy with the computer scene but I kinda does not make sense what's up with that? It was established that Matt's sister also despises Bradley, is he a friend? why is he also just allowed to be let in the house especially the kids don't treat this creep any good. So we follow our main character Matt where he seems to be good in everything, he's a math savant, science inventor and also an athlethe at the same time but everything is holding him back for this weirdo, creep and probably the most irritating written character in all Goosebumps which is Bradley. Hopefully none of the next Horrorland books are worse than this one. ![]() ![]() ![]() It will take so much more then her cunning mind to escape the onslaught of trackers. The weather and the terrain itself is a constant challenge. There are those in town, including Alice’s ridiculous father-in-law, who oppose the packhorse library and believe it’s spreading indecency and immoral content to the good people of Kentucky. The two make friends, along with the other librarians, giving Alice the sense of belonging to a community that she’s always wanted. She’s everything that Alice wants to be, self-sufficient, smart, and most importantly, happy. These packhorse librarians not only provide books, but for some, they are the only connection for these families to the rest of the world.Īlice works closely with Margery, a woman whose family has a muddy past in the community. Eleanor Roosevelt’s traveling library initiative has created a need for able young women to take books to the people living too far to come to a local library. When Alice sees an opportunity that will get her out of the house and allow her to be useful in the community, she grabs it and doesn’t look back. ![]() Her hubby’s not much better, seeing as his first reaction in any situation is to see which way his daddy leans, then agreeing. ![]() Her new home is inhospitable to say the least, mostly due to the ever disapproving presence of her new father-in-law who has plenty of opinions on what’s proper for a woman. Alice Wright is a proper British girl who doesn’t quite fit in at home and ends up marrying an exotic American man and moving west to definitely not fit in there as well. ![]() ![]() This book offers the first sustained comparative perspective on the `ulama and their increasingly crucial religious and political activism. But these discourses are equally shaped by-and contribute in significant ways to-contemporary debates in the Muslim public sphere. Their discourses are informed by a longstanding religious tradition, of which they see themselves as the custodians. He shows how their religious and political discourses have evolved in often unexpected but mutually reinforcing ways to redefine and enlarge the roles the `ulama play in society. While focusing primarily on Pakistan, Zaman takes a broad approach that considers the Taliban and the `ulama of Iran, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, India, and the southern Philippines. ![]() In doing so, it provides a new foundation for the comparative study of Islam, politics, and religious change in the contemporary world. ![]() Muhammad Qasim Zaman describes the transformations the centuries-old culture and tradition of the `ulama have undergone in the modern era-transformations that underlie the new religious and political activism of these scholars. This book helps account for the increasingly visible public role of traditionally educated Muslim religious scholars (the `ulama) across contemporary Muslim societies. Summary: From the cleric-led Iranian revolution to the rise of the Taliban in Afghanistan, many people have been surprised by what they see as the modern reemergence of an antimodern phenomenon. ![]() ![]() ![]() In memory of Mason Henry, please visit our floral store.
